Location & getting around

  • The Luzia House is located in Santa Luzia, a residential and peaceful neighborhood just above the city center of Funchal. The area is well connected, safe, and popular with locals.

  • The city center, cafés, supermarkets, and the seafront are within walking distance. Depending on pace and destination, most places can be reached in around 15–25 minutes on foot.

  • Daily life is very walkable, and many guests live here without a car. However, if you plan to explore more of the island, such as hikes, beaches outside Funchal, or scenic viewpoints, renting a scooter or car is recommended.

  • We’re located close to the center of Funchal, so for everyday life you can easily get around on foot. Shops, cafés, the city center, and the sea are all within walking distance.

If you’d like to explore more of Madeira - its hikes, beaches, viewpoints, and less accessible corners - we strongly recommend renting a car or scooter. The island is known for steep hills, long tunnels, and winding roads, and while public transport exists, it’s limited and not always practical for day trips.

Having your own transport gives you far more flexibility and lets you explore Madeira at your own pace, without relying on schedules. We’re happy to share reliable and affordable rental recommendations if you’d like support with that.

Work setup & internet

  • We run on glass fibre technology with speeds around 500 Mbit/sec (often more), supported by a mesh network that covers the entire accommodation. For those who prefer a wired connection, we can usually provide LAN cables as well. Some of our guests work in high-bandwidth fields like game streaming or video editing - and while no system is perfect 100% of the time, our connection has proven to be very reliable for most needs.

  • Yes. The Luzia House is set up with dedicated workspaces. Each room has a desk, monitor, plugs and comfortable seating, and there are additional shared areas where guests can work during the day. The setup supports focused, independent work rather than a loud or crowded coworking atmosphere.

  • Many guests do work full-time while staying at The Luzia House, while others combine part-time work with a longer holiday or workation. The house attracts people who value a good work setup but also want flexibility to enjoy Madeira, explore the island, or slow down their pace when needed.

Length of stay & booking

  • We require a minimum stay of 7 nights. We like to host people accept people who can stay at least a 2 weeks, so they can settle in properly, get homy, deepen their connections with the community and enjoy a more regular time schedule.

  • There is a light selection process for any stay above 2 weeks to ensure a good fit between guests and the house environment. This helps maintain a respectful, work-friendly atmosphere for everyone.

  • Just send us your WhatsApp or e-Mail, and we’ll add you to our priority list. That way, if a room becomes available, you’ll be the first to know - before we post it on public channels. It’s the best way to stay in the loop without constantly checking listings.

  • It’s best to book at least a few weeks in advance, especially if you’re planning a longer stay or arriving during busier months. Availability can fill up quickly due to the limited number of rooms and the mid- to long-term nature of most stays.

That said, last-minute availability does occasionally open up. If your dates are flexible, it’s still worth reaching out to check current options.

Practical questions

  • Madeira in winter is surprisingly mild. December has daytime temperatures between 18°C–22°C and cooler evenings around 14°C–16°C. Rain can happen (especially in the mountains), but it usually doesn’t last long. Bring a light jacket and a rain layer just in case. The sea stays around 20°C, so yes, you can still swim! It's a lovely time for hiking and enjoying nature with fewer crowds.

  • Each of our locations has its own dedicated FAQ—covering all the essentials like how to get there, Wi-Fi access, amenities, and more. On top of that, we’ll send you a beautifully crafted PDF guide before your arrival. It includes useful apps for exploring Madeira, recommended groups to join, tips for outdoor activities, and even a special packing list (with a few things you might not expect!). Everything is designed to make your arrival smooth and your stay as relaxed and inspired as possible ✨

  • Pack for layers! Weather can change quickly. Hiking shoes are really useful here - the trails can be slippery. If you prefer not to bring them, there’s a good Decathlon and second-hand market on the island. You can always buy them here and resell them at the end of your stay if needed.

  • No, no worries at all. Almost everyone speaks English here, especially in the nomad community and around Funchal. Most expats and locals are super friendly and helpful. So even if you don’t speak a word of Portuguese, you’ll get around just fine.
